Isola Morosini

Description

The village lies between the Isonzo and the Isonzato and belongs to the comune of San Canzian d’Isonzo but its inhabitants have maintained the Friulian speech and place names that existed before the Veneto-bisiaco dialect that spread beyond the Isonzo. The area used to be characterised by extensive woods that gradually gave way to marshes and the sea. The area was the property of the noble Malipiero family from 1549 and later of the Venetian Morosini. The reclamation and deforestation began under the administration of Austria and was completed between the wars.
