52- 60 cm, the upperparts dark, white underside, long wings. Present during migration, especially in April-May and August-September. Relatively common with isolated individuals in the lagoon, in valli da pesca (fishing reserves), the lower reaches of rivers and along the low coast, effecting spectacular dives to catch fish.
