Grey Plover

Pluvialis squatarola

26-29 cm, sexes similar. Grey plumage, black and white on the under parts during the breeding season. Grey in winter with characteristic black “armpit”, visible in flight. It does not nest here but is present throughout the year in highly variable numbers. At high tide, it forms large flocks in association with the dunlin on barrier islands and similar habitats and then disperses on the tidal flats to feed during low tide.
