37-45 cm, sexes similar. Brownish with curved beak, shorter than the curlew, and with characteristic dark streaks on the head. Present during migration especially from March to May and then in July-September. Does not nest. It can be observed in a wide variety of wet coastal habitats in lower numbers than the curlew.
