“Pescherini” nets

Emerging from the river Isonzo, the landscape is typical of river mouths in this area, with seagrass-covered tidal flats dotted with so-called “pescherini” nets attached to little stakes embedded in the mud and sand that lead fish into fyke net traps (known locally as “cogol”). This traditional form of sustainable fishing catches shrimps in winter and smelt in summer using fine mesh, while wider mesh is used to capture flounder, goby, eel, as well as sea bass, grey mullet and eagle ray. The “pescherini” usually consist of panels with 5 or 6 stakes and 1 or 2 fyke nets. A series of “pescherini” combine to form a “peschera”.
